The Hague Apostille Convention
As of 2026, over 125 countries are members of the Hague Apostille Convention. Documents from any member country are recognized in every other member country when authenticated with an apostille.
Recent additions
China (2023) and Canada (2024) both joined recently — a major change from the older embassy legalization process. The UAE has not joined and still requires embassy legalization plus MoFA attestation.
Countries that still require legalization
A shrinking list still requires embassy legalization — including several Middle Eastern and African countries. If your destination isn't Hague, plan for extra time and coordination through the U.S. Department of State and the destination's consulate.
