What to have ready
Home appointments are the simplest kind to prepare for. A short checklist keeps the visit to a few minutes.
- The complete printed document, including any notarial certificate wording
- Acceptable, unexpired photo identification for every signer
- A clear, well-lit surface to sign on — a kitchen or dining table works best
- Parking guidance, building entry, gate codes, or buzzer instructions
- A note about steps, a locked storm door, or anything that affects reaching the door
- Any witness instructions stated by the document, and who will provide the witnesses
- Pets secured if that makes the visit easier for everyone
Important signer requirements
Signing at home does not change the requirements for the notarial act itself.
- The notary must be able to identify each signer using acceptable identification or another method allowed under applicable law.
- The notary must be able to communicate directly with the signer during the appointment.
- The notary must be able to determine that the signer is acting willingly for purposes of the notarization.
- The notary must be able to complete the required notarial procedure, including any signing that must occur in the notary's presence.
- The notary does not evaluate medical condition, and a relative cannot answer for the signer when direct communication is required.
